A paloma is a margarita-like cocktail made with tequila that is bursting with citrusy grapefruit flavor. To start, I made a super easy homemade grapefruit simple syrup for the base of the cocktail. I opted to use fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice instead of bottled so the added flavor from the syrup gave these the perfect balance of freshness with a citrusy punch!

Topped with sparkling water for a refreshing fizz, the drink is finished with a salt or sugar-rimmed glass. It’s perfect for a warm afternoon, poolside chat, or anytime you crave a taste of sunshine this spring and summer!

To make a Grapefruit Paloma, you will need these simple ingredients:

  • granulated sugar
  • water
  • a bunch of fresh grapefruits – you will need one for the simple syrup, the cocktail, and for garnish!
  • tequila
  • sparkling water
  • lime wedges

Recipe Tips and Suggestions:

  • I opted to make grapefruit simple syrup for this recipe to add even more grapefruit flavor. If you want to skip this, you can make just plain simple syrup with water and sugar (or buy store bought simple syrup).
  • Like above, if you do not want to just use fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice, you can buy grapefruit juice at the store. If you know you want a more vibrant and sweeter cocktail, store bought is a great option.
  • The grapefruit simple syrup can easily be doubled, tripled, etc. and can be made in advance if needed. If you make it in advance, just store the syrup in a container in the fridge until you are ready to use it!
  • I did a simple sugar rim, but you can also do salt or you can get a bit fancy and do a grapefruit-zest with sugar rim!
  • Any type of sparkling water will work. I used a grapefruit sparkling soda, but you could also do lime or other flavors to create some interesting flavor combos! Grapefruit soda could also work to add even more flavor and sweetness if desired.
  • Please note that the recipe for the grapefruit simple syrup will yield much more than you need for one cocktail, however, the cocktail recipe provided is for one, that way you can easily multiple as needed. The syrup makes enough for about 4-6 cocktails depending on how sweet you and your guests prefer!
