Whenever I’m thinking of holiday entertaining menus, it’s easy to get caught up in the main dishes and side dishes, but having some appetizers to pull out while your guests wait for the main event is always a good idea. Of course, the simpler, the better. These Cranberry Orange Brie Crostini are a great choice because you might already be prepping some cranberry sauce so making extra to spoon on top of an appetizer is not a huge lift. These are a must for your holiday table spreads!

Recipe Tips and Suggestions:

  • If brie cheese is not your favorite, you can also use other cheeses like goat cheese, camembert, boursin, or even white cheddar.
  • Feel free to leave out the orange if it’s not your thing.
  • These are best served warm while the cheese is melty. You can prep the cranberry sauce in advance, but I recommend toasting the bread and melting the cheese once you are ready to serve it.
  • You will note in this recipe that I suggest draining some of the liquid from the cranberry topping. This to avoid it being too saucy and messy for spooning on top of the crostini. It will give you a thicker sauce.
  • Related to the above, I also don’t like for the cranberry sauce to be cold. You will need to chill the sauce for it to thicken once you make it, so do plan in advance. I like to take out the cranberry sauce and let it come to room temperature before spooning on top of the bread and cheese.
  • I like the added crunch of toasted pecans or you can use walnuts.

This simple holiday appetizer is elegant and delicious. Toasted baguette topped with melty brie cheese and topped with an easy cranberry orange sauce and toasted pecans.

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces fresh cranberries
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 large navel orange, zested and juiced
  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 french baguette
  • 6 ounces brie cheese
  • 1/3 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Add the water and sugar to a sauce pan. Bring to a light boil and dump in the cranberries. Lower the heat and let the cranberries simmer until they begin to pop, about 10-15 minutes. Carefully pour out about half of the liquid. Stir in the juice of the orange and half the zest. Let the sauce stand for about 10 minutes and then transfer into a container or bowl and stick in the fridge. The sauce will thicken as it cools. Let chill for at least one hour.
  2. Heat your oven to 350 degrees F. Slice the baguette. Brush a little bit of olive oil on top of each slice. Toast the sliced crostini for 3 minutes.
  3. Slice the brie wheel into 12 slices. Remove the bread and place a slice on top of each piece. Place back into to the oven for about 5 more minutes or until the cheese is warm and slightly melted.
  4. While the bread is toasting, add the pecans to a saute pan over medium low heat. Toast the nuts until fragrant and remove.
  5. Once the bread and cheese is warmed, spoon some of the cranberry sauce on top. Sprinkle some of the remaining zest on top along with a few of the toasted pecans. Serve warm.
