Whole Wheat Margherita Flatbread Pizza with Balsamic Reduction Sauce
Ok, I think I know one of the reasons I don’t like going to the grocery store. It’s the hoard of people. Perhaps it’s the small town that I live in, but seriously, my grocery store is always packed when I go. So packed that I can barely get down the aisles. WHY?! Is there nothing better to do here than go to the darn grocery store?! And let me just say that I don’t like crowds. I don’t like people being all up in my grill!! And why, oh why is that that whenever you get to where you want to be, someone is always in the freaking way of the food I want to grab. For example. I wanted to get some mozzarella cheese for this pizza. It took me at least 5 minutes to finally get to it because a couple just stood in front of all the cheese and were discussing what types of cheese they needed for the week. I stood there thinking, “DUDES, I know what cheese I want, get the heck out of my way! BLARGHHGHGHGHGHGHGH!”. I know, I have zero patience. I’m like the scrooge of the grocery store. And of course, it didn’t help that I was still pretty sick this weekend. Within 5 minutes of walking in, I was getting all sweaty. BLARGHGHGHGHGHGH! Ok, I’m done with my rant and my BLARGHGHGHing.
I hope you enjoy this pizza. It’s good…and stuff…
Whole Wheat Margherita Flatbread Pizza with Balsamic Reduction Sauce
Flatbread Recipe from How Sweet It Is
– 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
– 1 tsp. baking powder
– 1/2 tsp. salt
– 1/4 tsp. black pepper
– 1/2 cup water
– 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil plus more for brushing
– 3 garlic cloves, minced
– 1 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
– 2 medium sized tomatoes, sliced thin
– 2 tbs. fresh basil, chiffonade
– salt and pepper to taste
– 1 cup balsamic vinegar
– 1/4 cup brown sugar
1. In a sauce pan, dissolve the brown sugar with the balsamic vinegar. Bring the balsamic vinegar to a light simmer. Simmer until the vinegar is reduced by half (about 15-20 mins). Let the vinegar cool and it should thicken. You can make this reduction sauce in advance if you would like.
2. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. In a bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, water, and olive oil with your hands until a dough forms. Then place the dough on a floured work surface. Roll the dough out to 1/4 inch thickness. You do not have to worry about rolling the dough out into a perfect circle or square! I think the odd shape makes it look nice and rustic :). Place the dough on a baking mat or on parchment paper on a baking sheet. Bake for about 5-7 minutes just until the dough just slightly starts to crisp up. Remove from the oven.
3. Brush the top of the flatbread with extra olive oil and a pinch of salt and pepper. Distribute the garlic, then the cheese, tomatoes, and the basil evenly over the flatbread. You can also sprinkle the top with another pinch of salt and pepper. Drizzle about 1/4 cup of the balsamic reduction over the pizza. Bake for another 8-10 minutes until the cheese is melted. Remove from the oven and drizzle with the remaining balsamic vinegar if desired.
– You do not need to use all of the balsamic reduction if you don’t want to! Feel free to use as much or as little as you like!

The flat bread pizza looks tasty… and healthy. I would love the balsamic reduction sauce…it gets nice and sweet when reduced which I am sure was delicious.
The balsamic reductions adds such great flavor to this pizza!
You are not the only one who can’t stand the crowd because I am also the same. Thats why I too store most of the ingredients I need except for meat and poultry. I also normally do my grocery during the weekdays because weekends are like a mad house inside the store I go too, all the more with the kids running around.
Nice bread and this will be perfect for our dinner as we are very light eater during the night, especially my hubby and he will simply adore this recipe.
Glad I am not alone, Nava! I wish I could go early on a random weekday, but stupid work gets in my way of doing that :P
While I too hate crowds, one of the few places where I will accept them is at the grocery store. But the wait to get your cheese was worth it! I especially love the balsamic reduction. Yum!
Haha! I suppose the wait for cheese is pretty much always worth it!
This sounds sooo yummy! I love the tomatoes and the balsamic reduction.
Thanks so much, Becki!
I love going to the grocery store. I could spend hours there. I like to go on the weekend mornings…early, like before 9am. It is super quiet then and you can just relax. Great looking pizza, I was thinking I was in the mood for a slice sometime soon but this post just sealed the deal.
Our store is even crowded at 9am on the weekends! it’s madness!
LOL! You crack me up. I hate crowded stores too. I am so lucky to be a stay at home mom that I go to the stores during the week in the mid-morning to avoid all the high traffic. Try to get me to go run errands on the weekends and I’m “BLARGHHGHGHGHGHGHGH!” myself :) I have absolutely no problem interrupting someone to get something especially if they are hogging a space. I would have definitely just said “do you mind if I get by you?” Some people only live in their bubble and are oblivious to everyone around them. I’m sorry you’re still feeling blah… hope the blahs go away very soon. But you’re a dynamo to make your own pizza crust. Way to go. :) This pizza looks amazing!! :)
I’m so glad you know where I am coming from, Ramona! lol. I go in knowing what I need to get. I like to be in and out! So seeing people stand in the way for the darned cheese for 15 minutes really grinds my gears, LOL!
Ooh Yum! That balsamic reduction would be good on all sorts of different pizzas, and I love that the crust is so thin (that’s always been my least favorite part)!
I love thin crust pizzas much better too. I prefer the taste and I don’t feel as guilty afterwards, lol!
This looks both gorgeous and like a wonderfully healthy spin on regular pizza. I love tomato slices on mine, and balsamic reduction? Yes please! Bookmarking this right away!
Thanks, Kiri! I love using big slices of tomatoes on my pizza!
Margherita pizza is one of my favorites and I love the addition of the balsamic reduction, perfect!!
Thanks, Cassie! The balsamic reduction really takes this to a whole new level of yumminess! :)
I hope you are feeling better! And I plan to look around next time I stop in front of the cheese to make sure that I am not blocking anyone. I tend to go into an hypnotic trance when faced with many kinds of cheese, so I might be guilty. The pizza sounds great. Looking at it reminded me I have a lone tomato in the fridge that would taste really good on a pizza!
Haha, no worries, Kristen. I actually think I do the same thing at the mall and it makes my husband so mad!
You’re right – this is a beauty – classic pizza made a wee bit healthier with the wheat crust. I go the grocer’s almost every day – now I am grateful that it’s a pleasure. Just took it for granted.
Wow, Claudia, every day?! I bet you get lots of fresh ingredients for your cooking that way!
That looks absolutely delicious! Thank you so much for sharing it!
Thanks so much, Raven!
Very delicious! I love thin crust pizza and this pizza looks great! Using balsamic reduction sauce is a great idea too! Only thing I had never had is whole wheat pizza. For the kids, I should make a switch soon so they will be used to the taste. This looks delicious! I also don’t like grocery shopping (or any shopping) in crowded store…and I came from a crowded country!
Thank you, Nami! The whole wheat crust definitely has a different taste than regular crust, but it’s not bad, especially if you put delicious toppings on top!
I love Margherita Pizza. It’s one of my favorites. Yours looks just beautiful. I love the whole wheat crust!
It’s one of my favorites too!
I hope blarghghghghgh,,,is go away now LoL,,btw pizza looks so yummy with balsamic reduction sauce great idea and I love the second pictures,,,looks pretty and colorful :)
LOL, thanks, Ridwan. Yes, the BLARRRGGHHHing has stopped for now, well, at least until I have to go back to the store again :P
Grocery stores can feel overwhelming at times… but look at this gorgeous whole wheat pizza! Love the margherita twist with the luscious tomatoes, fresh basil and… cheese! :) – very nice Stephanie, it was worth the sweat!
Thank you, Kelly! I think it was worth it too! :)
That’s why I like to get to the grocery store early in the morning! I’m a power shopper and like to get in and out quickly, too.
Wow, this has put me in the mood for pizza! Gorgeous!!! And I love the idea of a balsamic reduction (at least on MY slices!).
I’m a power shopper too. In and out!
I dont like crowds either. You should have started coughing behind them and they would have backed away thinking you may be contagious. HEHEHE. I hate the person who gets really close to you when you are in the isle. I want to yell “Stop invading my space!” Your pizza looks great! I want to dive in face first! Yum!
Haha! That is a great idea, Veronica. Maybe I will do that even when I am no longer sick :P
That is so much better than any delivery pizza…sigh. It looks amazing.
Thank you! I think so too! :)
This is absolutely stunning! I hope you’re feeling better….and I LOVE grocery shopping! I would be the person standing in front of the cheeses! Love, love, LOVE the balsamic reduction – that is stunning!
Woman, I would have to take you doooooowwwnnn! :P I love the balsamic reduction too! Really yummy!
Wow! The pizza looks absolutely delicious! So bright and fresh, love each ingredient, your photos did it justice. Thanks for sharing Stephanie! Have a good one! =]
Oh my.. nothing drives me up the wall more than going to the grocery store and having two people stop in the middle of an aisle and decide it’s time to have a chinwag about absolutely nothing. I can’t get through, there are people behind me, can’t get to the shelves – makes me want to get a stick.
This pizza is fantastic and your Berry Citrus bread at Chef Dennis’ looks divine!
This pizza looks amazing. Such great flavors. I love the balsamic reduction drizzled on top. This can definitely take away the supermarket blues!
Honestly, if I could I would ban other people from being in the supermarket while I’m there. I hate waiting behind people while they make their minds up!
Anyway, this pizza looks and sounds gorgeous!
Haha!! I agree, Julia! Well, maybe at least put a time limit for how long they can stand in one place, lol!
I definitely feel your pains about the grocery store. I can’t wait until we’re rich and famous (yeah, REALLY far in the future!) and I can just have someone do my grocery shopping for me =)
I find if you just shove people out of the way the trip goes by a lot faster. Great pizza!
This looks and sounds soooooo yummy!! I can’t wait to try it! I bookmarked this recipe so I can make it tomorrow. Need to buy more cheese!
