Skinny Cheesesteak Sandwiches
I don’t post enough sandwich recipes on this blog and they are actually one of my favorite things to make for quick weeknight meals when I don’t feel like making a big dinner. This Skinny Cheesesteak is one of those sandwiches!
I’m not going to call this a Philly Cheesesteak because all the Philly peeps out there will cut me and send me hate mail. For real. People are very protective of their classic cheesesteak sandwiches and I’m not going to go there! This is simply a lightened up version of the classic Philly favorite!
So how is this cheesesteak lighter? First, we use lean flank steak over more fatty beefsteak. Second, we load up on more veggies. Then we swap out the traditional processed cheese sauce with a new sauce made with provolone cheese and Parmesan cheese. Oh! And one more trick is to scoop out some of the extra bread. I personally HATE biting into a sandwich that is mostly bread, yuck! I need a much bigger filling to bread ratio with my sandwiches. I always scoop out some of the bread out of sandwich rolls. It’s a great way to save a few extra calories and carbs!
This skinnified cheesesteak is delicious and at just under 400 calories, it is way lower in fat compared to traditional cheesesteaks.
These skinny cheesesteak sandwiches are made with lean flank steak, fresh veggies, and a lighter calorie cheese sauce! Don’t want to go through the trouble of making the cheese sauce? No problem! Just places a slice of provolone cheese on top of each sandwich and stick under the broiler until melted. Recipe slightly adapted from Cooking Light

Steak, peppers and cheese-those do make for an amazing sandwich. Cool idea cutting out the bread to lower the carbs, especially since the bread can be too thick for my tastes. Your sandwich here looks like it is straight from the deli. All those crispy veggies showing does make my mouth water-yum!
I agree, Tina! I often end up picking away almost half of the bread on a hoagie roll anyway!
Is it wrong to want this for breakfast???? It sound (and looks) just amazing! Have a great weekend!
Ha! No, it would be a great source of protein to start off your day! lol
We have rewatched the entire series since we’ve been here. It came on at 6 every night and I was seriously cranky if I missed it. I love this sandwich! I would totally love one(or two!)of these with an episode of friends!
Yeah! It’s such a fun show!
I love a real Philly sammich, though I’ve only had one that would be considered “real” a couple times in my life. But if you can compare it to Ross – then I know it must be amazeballs. :)
Thanks, Megan! I think I’ve only had a real one once or twice too. But, I’ve read they often use like Cheez Whiz and that kind of grosses me out! lol
Oh my goodness, YES! I need to make these for my husband (and myself, of course). I think he’d do just about anything I asked with a plate of these sandwiches in front of him.
Thank you, Georgia! This sandwich is very man-friendly!
LOVE Cheesesteak sandwiches! I am going to try this one soon!
Thanks, Erin! Hope you like it! It’s such an easy recipe!
I’m not going to laugh because when I was in college the world totally stopped when 90210 and Melrose Place were on. Like half the dorm would pile into a room to watch it and we’d throw stuff at the tv and get all kinds of worked up about it. Besides, who didn’t like Friends!?
Haha! I think we all have our shows!
Haha, I had a Friends phase, but I don’t think it was ever this intense! I’ll take that sandwich any day though, looks like a great comfort food type of dish! :)
Some people think I’m crazy that I can watch the same thing over and over, but I don’t know, it’s almost a comfort thing sometimes!
We rotate between the healthy and non-healthy food as part of our diet and yes, this sandwiches with the tips on how to bring out a healthy version is one of it I must make at home. Simple yet great in taste it looks like.
Thank you, Nava! I think having a balance is good thing!
When I discovered Philly cheese steak sandwiches, I remember I continuously ate every day lunch until practically my friends told me that’s way too much. I know, I get crazy sometimes (obsessed?). I’ve never made it at home though. I need to check out your recipe. Your sandwich looks so good that I feel like my addiction will start again!
Haha! I can see why you love them, they are delicious!
I love Friends!! Gosh…I’m such a sitcom and TV junkie I watch way too many shows. My hubby don’t agree on too much TV together… but we do like to watch shows like Three’s Company on Nick at Nite… yes.. we’re old. :)
I’m such a junkie too! lol
Oh my goodness… I think I should have read my comment before I hit send.. LOL. I meant to say my hubby and I don’t agree on too many shows… Duh… I need to go to bed I think. :) I also forgot to comment on your sandwich… duh again. It looks beyond fabulous… I love that episode when the Thanksgiving sandwich gets thrown away… Ross is too much! LOL! :)
haha! we have a bunch of shows on Sunday nights that we watch together like Once Upon a Time, Walking Dead, Desperate Housewives, but other than Friends, we like totally different shows too.
All of them are funny but my favorite is Ross. :) Big laugh watching friends and this mouth watering Philly Steak… that is what I call good life. Thank you for sharing and have a great weekend!
Ross cracks me up a lot too, especially in Season 5! So many good ones including his poor sandwich :)
Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich is a real treat for me. I love all combination of saute onions, green pepper and oh the melted cheese. It’s just so good.. I made this sandwich sometime ago and didn’t blog about it myself. LOL.. I love watching FRIENDS too. They crack me up and puts a smile on my face whenever I feel down. Enjoy your weekend!! xoxo Jo
Thanks, Jo! Friends always cheers me up too! :)
I love Friends too :) And this sandwich!
Schmanks!
Oh dear lord I think I’ve found my twin. I have the same obsession with Friends – I own the box set and it is constantly on whenever I’m home. I’ve seriously memorized every single line in the entire series, which I’ve watched at least 50 times, maybe even more. So yeah, I’m a super Friends geek like you guys :)
As for the sandwich, it looks lovely but you’re missing the moistmaker!! I’m just teasing. It looks great, and it’s an added bonus that it’s under 400 calories.
Haha! I’m so glad to have found my twin! I think I’ve watched each one the same amount! It just never gets old for me!
And you’re right! I can’t believe I forgot the moistmaker!
I have to get one of these every time I am in Philly. Too bad it ruins the diet for like a month after wards. I think my husband would love me double time if I made these at home for dinner. I used to watch Friends dubbed in France. It was too funny.
You should make these then, Emily! They are half the calories of a regular one!
I absolutely ADORE Philly cheese steaks, and I love the fact that you thought to hollow the bread out a bit to lessen the calorie intake. And of course make room for more filling! Thanks for sharing Stephanie this looks great, and we all have a show we’re addicted to, I have too many to name =] Have a great weekend <3
Thanks, Kym! I’m all about more filling! I hate when a sandwich is mostly bread. I end up picking most of it away anyway!
I love Friends too! And this sandwich looks awesome – so toasty and warm and hearty.
Thank you, Katie!
This is the perfect Saturday night feast!
Thanks, Kristi!
These stacks look both healthy and very delish – great recipe :D

This sandwich looks wonderful ;) Hahaha it’s funny how you and your husband like Friend so much ~ I love watching Veronica Mars and will rewatch it nearly every year :D
Thank you, Daisy! I haven’t watched Veronica Mars yet!
This looks yummy! I will have to make these for dinner one night. :)
Thanks, Susie! They are super easy to make!
This is my first visit to your blog – the cheesesteak made me do it! I love the lightened up cheese sauce. And, of course, we love Friends too!
Welcome, Valerie! I’m so glad you stopped by!!
Oh man…the things I would do to this sandwich if I wasn’t a vegetarian! It looks so delicious!
Haha! Maybe you could use seitan? Or just load up on the veggies!
Oh these look delicious, Stephanie! I love all those peppers and onions poking out! And great idea about hollowing out the bread! So fun to read about your addiction to Friends…..but it really was a great series! : )
Thank you, Anne! :)
I just purchased philly cheese brats and I am totally using some of these ingredients for our dinner tomorrow night! These look fabulous. My hubs and I were addicted to Friends as well. It’s been a while since we have watched them though. Great show!
Hope your sandwiches come out great too, Dee!!
Hee.hee, love it! I was heavily into Friends at one point (but is it possible it was about 17 years ago?!! :)), this sandwich looks positively delicious and enormously satisfying – perfect for our apres ski!
Haha! Well, the show ended in 2004, so not quite 17 years ago, LOL!
