Pretzel Rolls
I don’t know why, but I have always been a little intimidated by working with yeast. I’ve only made my own breads a few times. And I don’t really know why it freaks me out, I’ve never had it not turn out, but it still makes me nervous. One of my “blog goals” has been to get over my fear of yeast.
I first saw these pretzel rolls on How Sweet It Is last spring and wanted to dive right in to the screen. I must make them! Tina made them into burger buns and the thought of a burger on a pretzel bun sounded too good to be true. Now, mine did not come out nearly as pretty, I think I cooked them about 2 or 3 minutes too long as you can see by how brown my slash marks got, but they still turned out pretty good. And sadly, my grocery store was out of pretzel salt (sigh), so I just sprinkled sea salt on mine.
So, how did they taste? Well, they tasted pretty darn good. But, myself, Hubs, and my brother all agreed that it made for a pretty heavy burger. I could only eat about half of mine and I was totally stuffed. The rolls aren’t as dense as I thought they would be, but they were still more dense than a regular burger bun.
So, I’m not sure I would make these as burger buns again. BUT, I think it’s still a great pretzel dough recipe and I would make these again as a small roll or as a bite to dip in my cheddar swiss fondue! Gah! That would be just amazing!!
So whether you make these into rolls, buns, or bites, if you are a soft pretzel fanatic, you should make these for your Super Bowl party or any fun party you have coming up! :)

I so understand about your fear of yeast. Yeast… doughs… they all freak me out. I must conquer this fear because I’m really holding myself back from making so much stuff. I want so badly to make scratch-made soft pretzels and pizza dough. These rolls look great. They maybe a bit heavy for a burger… but the do look amazing. Maybe for a heartier sandwich that you would use a ciabatta roll for…. I think you did a fabulous job!! Way to go. :)
Thanks, Ramona! Yeah, I think it would be better as a small dinner roll or a bite, but if you cut it thinner, it would be great for a sandwich too!
This is another one on my “to do” list. Glad to see that other bloggers are well pleased with the recipe-gives me more incentive. Your rolls do look fantastic-yum!
Thanks, Tina! You should totally give it a try!
Congrats on the Liebster and also on making such a fantastic bread. This is one I am definitely going to experiment with.
Thank you, Hester!
I used to buy pretzel rolls at a German Bakery when I lived in Texas. They are good with a little butter on the inside also. I buy Margarita salt when I can’t find any pretzel salt. These rolls have made me hungry.
GREAT idea to use margarita salt!
Dear lord, this looks like heaven! Pretzel and bread fuzed into one…what could be better?
Oh, I know! Making a grilled cheese out of one of these rolls would be pretty fantastic :)
Oh man, grilled cheese on this bread would be amazing!
Thanks so much for passing on the award to us! And these rolls look fantastic, I love the idea of using them with cheese fondue!
Thanks, Anna! You are so welcome!
Hi Stephanie,
Your recipe sounds so yummy…can’t wait to try! This is right up my alley! The picture is making me drool as well!

Thank you so much, Purabi!
These look amazing! I love a good sandwich on a pretzel roll.
Thank you, Kelly!
I love love love pretzel rolls. I wish every restaurant had them so that I wouldn’t have to make them all the time :-P
Haha! I would love if every restaurant made them!
I keep thinking I need to learn to make some – my local grocer sells a 4-pk for like $3 but with 5 people in our family, it gets expensive fast! I have to sneak them while my kids are at school when I really want one… Good for you for giving them a shot!!
That does get expensive, Jen! I was surprised how easy these were to make!
What an interesting idea! I’ve never had a pretzel roll, but it’s a really intriguing concept :)
Thanks, Kiri! I’ve never had one until I made these!
Congrats on the Liebster award! I was recently awarded this too and it feels so good to be recognized. You definitely deserve this! The pretzel rolls? My hubs would go bonkers over these, I will put these in the queue!
Thank you so much, Maggie!
I made these and they were AWESOME!! We gobbled all 12 of them up in about two days. Oops. Thanks for a wonderful recipe!
Yeast breads are generally not my friend…but I might have to put my fears aside and make these. They are gorgeous and I love the idea of using them for sandwiches.
If I can do it, you can too! :)
These look perfect. I looooove pretzels!
Me too!!
Stephanie! I LOVE pretzel rolls! But I’m like you….kind of nervous working with yeast and I haven’t made nearly as much bread as I would like. But these ….I have to try! You are right…maybe a bit too heavy for a sandwich….but great for dips and fondues! You did a great job! (And congrats on your well deserved Liebster award!)
Thanks, Anne! I definitely recommend making these into bites for fondue!
yummmm! Pretzel rolls dipped in your cheddar swiss fondue sounds amazing :) These turned out gorgeous!
Thanks, Kristina! Cheese and pretzels are meant to be!
Congratulations on your award Stephanie (well deserved!) and thank you so much for passing the honour on to me. Your rolls look incredible! I’ve never come across pretzel salt before… but I will definitely be keeping an eye out for it now. And, funny enough, I just happened to pick up cheese for a fondue this weekend… the miraculous timing of it all! :).
You’re so welcome, Kelly! Pretzel salt in my store is hard to find, but it is usually where all the salt and other seasonings are, usually by the popcorn seasonings!
Oh I love pretzel rolls. This is totally on my to do list for 2012. That sandwich looks amazing.
Thanks, Lindsey! I totally recommend giving these a try!
I have seen these going around too but you have a great question…how to make them. I think they sound fabulous as a roll for the burger bun but I do love my soft pretzels with cheese. So many great options!
Thanks, Emily! I think I would like these best dipped in cheese!
Stephanie!!

Congrats on the award! I love making pretzels, but I’ve never done pretzel rolls before. It’s been on my “list” for a while though. I would have thought to make them for burgers too, but good to know that they were too heavy. I was thinking of making BLT’s for lunch one day this week, so maybe I’ll try this out.
Oh, these would be great for a BLT, I would just slice them a little thinner maybe!
The sound amazing! I am a sucker for all things salted – definitely will try these out. Perhaps as a hotdog but to stuff with a an apple chicken sausage and some sort of melted cheese sauce…
I love the way you think, Laura! :)
These are gorgeous. Yeast used to intimidate me too. But look at the payoff. You rocked these out girl. They are little rolls of perfection.
Thanks, Kim! I think I have conquered my fear!
I love this idea, and they are cute as well! I can imagine one as a base for a great sandwich smothered in spicy mustard and cheese! Congrats on the Top 9 :)!
Thanks, Amy! Congrats to you too!
Oh, these are picture perfect!!! No surprise to find these on the Top 9…congratulations!
Thank you, Lizzy!
Congrats on top 9 today :) pretzel rolls looks perfect !!
Thanks, Ridwan!
I love these! I was just thinking about making these the other day and now I must make them! Your top 9 must have been a sign! Congrats!
It must have been a sign, Sheri!

Well I get stressed out whenever baking, so I get really intimidated by yeast and I’m really scared thinking what if it doesn’t rise, etc. Unlike cooking, I have no idea how to fix the recipe, which really scares me. So when you said you get intimidated and I saw this post, I really thought you did an amazing job. And you were on top9? Yay!!! I’m really happy for you! These Pretzel rolls look amazing!
Oh, how fun! I can think of some many lovely things I would put on these rolls!
LOVE! I adore pretzel rolls. I get so excited when they are served in restaurants. I once had a lobster roll on one – so amazing. This recipe is great. Well done.
I just came across your blog, and I think I’m in love! Pretzel rolls are so yummy, and these look incredible. I can’t wait to try! (And don’t worry–I too am intimidated by baking bread with yeast! Never done it–eek!)
I’m so glad you stopped by, Katie! You can totally make these! And actually, I’ve been reading that the way yeast is made these days, it almost always works!
