4th of July week continues! It’s actually been a few years since I actually went and watched fireworks on the 4th. Last year we just watched from down the street. I have mixed feelings about going to watch them. While I enjoy watching the show, I hate all of the crowds and traffic. I’m such an old lady. I’m seriously like 90 years old…

I don’t know why I don’t have more popcorn recipes on this blog, it’s truly one of my favorite snacks. And I love experimenting with flavored popcorn, both savory and sweet!

Patriotic Popcorn

This Patriotic Popcorn is perfectly sweet and oh so fun and festive! This is a kid-friendly treat that the whole family can enjoy. You can pack it to take to munch on while watching fireworks! Or it would also make a great party favor if you package it in cute little treat bags. And it could really be adapted for any holiday, just change up the sprinkles! I used Wilton Vanilla candy melts as I am not a big fan of white chocolate but either will do the trick!

Patriotic Popcorn - the perfect treat to celebrate the 4th of July! Fun and perfectly festive for kids and party favors!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup popcorn kernels
  • 2 tbs. coconut oil
  • 12 oz. vanilla candy melts (or white chocolate)
  • red, white, and blue sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Line two baking sheets with foil or parchment paper.
  2. In a large pot, stir together the coconut oil and kernels until well-coated. Heat over medium high heat and cover. Once the kernels start to pop, carefully shake the pan every 30 seconds or so to ensure that the kernels all pop and do not burn. Remove from the heat. Pour about half of the popcorn into a large bowl.
  3. Melt the candy melts (or white chocolate) in the microwave or over a double boiler. Pour about half of the melted candy over the popcorn and toss with your hands until it is well-coated with the candy. Pour the popcorn into one of the pans and spread so it is in an even layer. Sprinkle some of the sprinkles over the popcorn and lightly toss again. Repeat with the remaining popcorn and melted candy.
  4. Allow for the popcorn and candy to dry for about 2-3 hours. If not serving right away, store in an airtight container. This popcorn is best served the day of or the day after.

Notes

If you can’t find red, white, and blue sprinkles, you can also use the good ol’ assorted colors and just call this firework popcorn!
