Dark Chocolate Frozen Yogurt
Whoa! Two sweet posts in a row! Kind of crazy for me, but I’m sure y’all aren’t gonna complain about it! I finally got an ice cream maker for Christmas from my Mom and have been dying to use it! While I do love me some ice cream, Hubs and I usually opt for frozen yogurt so I knew I wanted to do yogurt and then I figured that since this was my first attempt at making it, I would start simple!
This dark chocolate frozen yogurt is SO decadent and delicious! Definitely very rich. A little goes a long way here! In fact, next time I might add a little less of the cocoa powder. But, best of all, this frozen yogurt is low in fat and was pretty simple to make! I can’t wait to make more yummy frozen treats!
Dark Chocolate Frozen Yogurt
Adapted from All Recipes
Serves 4-6
Ingredients:
– 3/4 cup sugar
– 2 tbs. corn starch
– 1 can (12 ounces) fat free evaporated milk
– 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
– 1-2 tbs. special dark cocoa powder*
– 1 tsp. vanilla extract
– 1 cup low-fat plain (or greek) yogurt
Directions:
1. Combine the sugar and cornstarch in a medium saucepan. Add the evaporated milk, chocolate chips, vanilla, and cocoa powder. Heat over medium heat until the mixture begins to thicken, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat and stir in the yogurt. Refrigerate until well-chilled.
2. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Notes:
– If you want to make just regular chocolate frozen yogurt, use regular unsweetened cocoa powder instead of the special dark powder.

Oooh, this looks so rich and nicely textured! I don’t have an ice cream maker and am not a big ice cream eater but I’ve never really thought about all the frozen yogurt possibilities I’m missing!
You should get one, Anna! They are great for frozen yogurts and sorbets too! :)
It sounds really great! I never thought of chocolate yogurt !
Oh, you have to try it, Medeja!!
My husband hates it when I pull out the ice cream maker because i usually try to do some low-fat/cal version of ice cream (or frozen yogurt.) He always complains that if you’re going to eat ice cream, you should just eat ice CREAM. But I bet your recipe would change his mind! Thanks for sharing and I can’t wait to see what other kinds of ice cream you come up with!
Your husband and my husband should start a club! I do the same thing and he hates it! I just made a batch of regular full-fat chocolate ice cream and he can dig into all he wants. I am going to try to be good and stay out of it :)
This does look like a tasty invitation to go over to the dark side of chocolate! I am sure this would satisfy all the chocolate craving without all the guilt! Delicious photos-thanks for sharing this frozen treat!
Thanks, Tina! I love dark chocolate!
Wow, this looks fabulous! I made a vanilla gelato yesterday…and I think my hubby would have preferred something chocolate. It looks so rich without all the fat/calories…great job!
Ohhh, I have also really wanted to try my hand with gelato! I thought this was perfect and didn’t miss the fat, but I think I will try to reduce the sugar next time. Hubs, on the other hand, prefers things with all the fat :P
Wow that looks amazing!! Frozen yogurt is SOOO amazing! Love it…so delicious
Thanks so much, Raven!
This looks fabulous…
I love frozen yogurt so much, my husband not so much… But this will sure convert him.
Thank you, Reem! We love frozen yogurt in this house!
Healthier than ice cream but with just as much flavour – looks so decadent (all it needs is some hot fudge :D)
Fantastic recipe!

Thanks, Kiri! It is pretty healthy and I think next time, I am going to try to reduce the sugar!
I went super simple when I started making ice cream too – I spent time figuring out which milk/cream ratio gave me the texture I loved and then I started mixing it up and adding stuff in!
Thanks, Jen! I think I am going to do the same here. I just made my first batch of regular ice cream and am excited to see how it will turn out. But, I agree, gonna start out simple! :)
Mmmmmm… I think I love this idea!! Great use of Greek yogurt!! :)
Thank you, Ramona! Greek yogurt is so great!
I haven’t tried frozen yogurt yet in my ice cream maker. This looks great – definitely not something I would turn down.
You should totally try it, Emily!

Wow Stephanie! I SO want a big ole bowl of this right now!
For some reason you weren’t showing up in my Reader but I resubscribed and reconnected on Google Friend. Odd but all is right again!
Thanks, Dee! I did move my blog to self-hosted wordpress a few months ago so that is probably why I disappeared from your list!
Wow – that looks amazing! I’m so glad you got an ice-cream maker for Christmas! I’d love to get one, but I’m afraid my “cooking healthy for me” site would become “cooking ice-cream for me!’
Oh, I know what you mean, Ann! I’m going to try my best to keep the recipes on the healthier side. I’m also looking forward to trying some fresh fruit sorbets!
Ah.. I’ll be over in 10. Do save me a BIG bowl! xx
Haha! You got it!
I need to try this!! I tried frozen yogurt years ago, and it was not good!
Oh no! I wonder what went wrong…I really liked this one, but I am going to try out a few different ones until I find one that I really like!

Hey, Emily! You do have to get one!! I bet you could do some great gluten-free recipes with it! :)
That looks gorgeous–Ben and Jerry’s used to make a dark chocolate sorbet, and this reminds me of a creamier version of that!
Oh, I’ve never seen a dark chocolate sorbet!! I’m intrigued…
I am way more of a dark chocolate fan than a milk chocolate fan. I definitely won’t complain about two sweet posts in a row.
I’m with you, Jennifer! I LOVE dark chocolate anything!
Loving this, Steph! I received an ice cream maker a few months ago but will admit to being too intimidated to try it out. I’m going to brave the ice cream waters with your recipe – thanks for the encouragement!! :)
Girl, if I can do this, you most definitely can! OMG, how amazing would a mexican chocolate ice cream be?! Totally up your alley :)
Your Chocolate Frozen Yogurt looks amazing:) Congratulations on Foodbuzz Top 9:)
Thank you so much, Geraldine!
This really looks like amazing frozen yogurt. I may have to take a stab at making a low carb version!
Carolyn, I was hoping you would say that! :) I would really LOVE to get a low-carb version!
This looks fantastic!!! it looks just like ice-cream hehe and i really like frozen yoghurt thanks for sharing this recipe and congrats for being Top 9 on Foodbuzz!
Thanks, Daisy! I thought it was so creamy and rich! Very ice cream-like!
I can’t wait for my niece to get slightly older, and then I can make this for her. I do enjoy frozen yogurt and practically can’t choose what flavours I like best. Congrats on Top 9 Stephanie!! Have a good week ahead. xoxo
I usually prefer ice cream over frozen yogurt, but this is some yogurt I could get down with! Dark, decadent, and delicious!
Beautiful! I love my ice cream maker but haven’t had the chance to make frozen yogurt yet. That must change soon!
This looks fabulous AND low-fat! :)
I’ve been experimenting with lots of frozen sorbets– I was pleasantly surprised that my chocolate sorbet turned out plenty creamy using only cocoa and no chocolate. I haven’t heard of the extra dark cocoa. I’ve tried Rapunzel and Dagoba and am still in the market for a great (but also child slave labor-free) cocoa. I think I will try Green & Black next.
