Asparagus & Bacon Wrapped Puff Pastries stacked on a blue plate

It’s time to start menu planning for Christmas – from the appetizers, the dinner, and of course, the sweets. I like to keep guests fed and happy throughout the day and let’s be honest, sometimes the appetizers are better than the dinner. And who doesn’t love bacon and cheese wrapped in buttery puff pastry? Automatic winner. Also, there is asparagus in these so we are winning in the veggie department too. These are basically a health food. You are welcome.

This is a very simple appetizer recipe to throw together and requires just 5 simple ingredients – asparagus, bacon, cream cheese (or some spreadable cheese like Boursin), puff pastry, and an egg (and a sprinkle of salt). To start, just crisp up some bacon slices and then it’s time to start wrapping! A smear of soft cheese, a slice of bacon and some trimmed asparagus, then you wrap up the puff pastry and seal with an egg wash and a sprinkle of salt and bake. Easy peasy!

One thing to note is that these are definitely not just bite-size appetizers. They are good size and one is more than enough per guest if you are serving them alongside other appetizers. They could even serve as a side dish. You can’t go wrong either way!

Recipe Tips and Suggestions:

  • Your puff pastry should be thawed, but still cold when rolling. Room temperature or warm puff pastry will not be as easy to work with and may not puff up as much when baking.
  • I like to use thinner stalks of asparagus for these (as pictured). Thicker stalks may not cook through in time.
  • You can use any soft, spreadable cheese for these – Boursin, or herb cream cheese (like chive and onion) work well! You could also slice brie.
  • When making these, you want to make sure to align the bacon slices and asparagus as pictured with the asparagus stalk extending about the length of the puff pastry.
  • For the bacon, you can either use a half slice of bacon or break a full slice in half and layer on top of one another. Just depends on how much bacon you want in each bite!

Asparagus & Bacon Wrapped Puff Pastries - This simple and delicious holiday appetizer is made with cream cheese, crispy bacon, and asparagus wrapped and baked in buttery puff pastry!

Ingredients

  • 1 package (2 sheets) puff pastry, thawed
  • 5 ounces Boursin cheese
  • 6 slices of bacon, cooked
  • 18 stalks asparagus, trimmed
  • 1 large egg
  • sea salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a baking mat. Roll out the two sheets of puff pastry. Place one sheet next to the other and roll them together to combine. Slice into 6 even rectangles.
  2. Grab one rectangle. Spread about 1 tablespoon of the cheese down the middle of the rectangle at an angle (corner to corner; as pictured). Then layer either a half slice of bacon (or break one full slice in half and arrange on top of one another), followed by three stalks of the asparagus.
  3. Beat the egg in a small bowl with a bit of water. Take one corner of the puff pastry and wrap over the asparagus (see photo). Brush with some of the egg wash. Then bring over the other corner of the pastry. Brush with more egg wash. Place on baking sheet. Sprinkle with sea salt. Repeat with remaining pastry and fillings.
  4. Bake pastry for approximately 20-25 minutes or until pastry is lightly golden. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

I do not recommed baking these in advance. The puff pastry will lose its crispiness. You can prep them up until they are ready to bake in advance though. Just cover the pan with foil and keep refrigerated overnight!
