Low-Fat Cheddar Chive Biscuits
You know what I wish I hated? Bread. I really wish I didn’t like it.
But damn you, bread, I just can’t quit you.
Give me some bread and olive oil to dip it in and it’s all over. Or any combo of bread and cheese. Heaven.
I try not to eat bread too often unless it’s with a sandwich or we are out for a nice dinner. But when Hubs requested some homemade soup last week for dinner, some nice biscuits just had to be made! One of my favorite biscuits are Cheddar Bay Biscuits. But, well, let’s face it, they are not so healthy.
I used the that delicious biscuit recipe and changed it up a bit by lightening it up and adding some fresh chives! They are still cheesy enough too and I didn’t feel like I was even eating a low-fat biscuit. Nom nom nom.
Low-Fat Cheddar Chive Biscuits
These biscuits are loaded with cheddar cheese and fresh chives and are low in fat!
Ingredients
- 2 cups Bisquick Heart Smart Mix
- 2/3 cup skim milk
- 3/4 cup reduced fat shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 tbs. + 2 tsp. fresh chives, chopped
- 2 tbs. Light Smart Balance spread
- 1/4 tsp. garlic salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Combine the mix, milk, 1 tbs. of chives, and cheese in a bowl. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Drop the pieces onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake for about 10 minutes.
- While the biscuits are baking, melt the butter spread in a bowl. Stir in the remaining 2 tsp. chives and the garlic salt.
- Remove the biscuits from the oven and brush some of the butter and chive mixture on top of each biscuit. Bake for an additional 5 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown on the bottom.

Bread is just too dang delicious. Now I want some oil to dip mine in, you temptress.
Haha! Sorry, I know, bread and olive oil with herbs is just the devil!
I can’t quit bread (or pasta or rice or carbs of any kind) either. I’ve never seen heart smart bisquick (and I’m sure I couldn’t find it out here.). But these look great! I’m adding this to the list of recipes to make when we go back to the U.S. Love the photos too!
Hmm, that stinks! You would probably have to order it or maybe they have some equivalent of a reduced fat baking mix?
That looks very tasty. Unfortunately, we don’t have Bisquick mix in England. :-(
Oh, that stinks, Jen! I bet you can find another brand of a low-fat baking mix? And really, any biscuit mix will do, it might just change the calories.
My weakness are bread, rice and pasta. I’m a carb lover at heart and it’s not the best thing for me. I love Bisquick… I think I can pull these off… I’m going to try them with my family. :) Have a great weekend!! ~ Ramona
Haha, I know what you mean. I love my carbs too. I wish I didn’t. Hope you like the recipe!
I am all over these, Stephanie! Anything that even begins to resemble Red Lobster’s biscuits has me hooked!
I hear you! Those biscuits are addicting!
perfect for my diet. thank you so much for the recipe :)
Glad you like them, Carol!
OMG these look amazing, I love biscuits, I can imagine haveing these with some butter!
Oh yes, butter makes them even better!
I’ve been wanting to make these forever and am so glad to have stumbled across your healthier recipe here, Stephanie. These would go so well with my chicken chili! Going to try them soon… Thanks!
These would be perfect with chili!! :)
Yeah, I wish I hated bread, too. And chocolate. And cake. And peanut butter. Oh, well, I’m doomed. As much as I can usually resist bread, though, I agree that I couldn’t face a bowl of soup without it and I’ll bet your lightened up biscuits were just as good as the originals!
Haha, I wish I hated all of those things, Anita!
Oh, I so feel your pain. I once tried going on a low-carb diet when Atkins was all the rage, but I had to quit because I kept getting random uncontrollable bread cravings… it was so bad that I’d have seriously contemplated running over my own granny just to get a bun! :)
I can never say no to a biscuit, either, especially when it’s warm from the oven… so thanks for posting this less-guilty version. Can’t wait to try it out!
I hear you, Isabelle! Going low-carb is really difficult!
I love a good biscuit recipe any day :D
These delish biscuits might just be what I have been waiting for!
Cheers

So glad you like the recipe!
Not sure if I would survive without bread, I do not even want to think of that. Drop biscuits I think deliver the best flavor with the least amount of effort. The batter does lend itself to a lot of variation, depending on what you want to add. Your choice here though would be my first and since I can eat bread-I do not have a last. Enjoy the weekend!
Haha, it’s too painful to think about life without bread!
Those biscuits look so delicious, they don’t even look low-fat! I have to give these a try! I wish I hated bread too… and you just can’t have soup without a good bread!
So true, Renee!
Those biscuits sound flavorful with chives and reduce fat cheddar cheese even better, and a healthy version of biscuits :)
Ridwan
Thank you, Ridwan!
Whenever I used to go to Red Lobster, I devoured their cheddar and garlic biscuits. I love this recipe, they sound so healthy and delicious:-) Hugs, Terra
I know what you mean, Terra! They are so dangerous! I don’t feel so guilty about these!
Oooh,, these sound delicious and I’ve already have the ingredients! I love bread!!
Hope you like the recipe, Billie!
Cheddar and chives. Like sour cream and onion. Perfect! Love the color it gives to the biscuits too!
Thanks, Jesica!
Biscuits look awesome!!! I totally have a love/hate relationship with bread! I eat it all the time but damn my jeans hate it lol.
I understand how you feel, Susie!
I so understand your bread “problem”! I’m the same, bread, olive oil & balsamic vinegar! While I’m not a low fat kind of person (I’d rather go without!), I love the look of these, chives and cheese, always a winning combo!
I always add balsamic to my dipping oil too! :)
If i had a choice between biscuits and cornbread I would choose cornbread but if you jazz up the biscuits at all I would go for the biscuits. I love the cheddar and chive. I would have these as my dinner tonight.
Ohh, girl, I love me some cornbread too!
Oh, yum! Now that I have chives in the garden again, these would be easy to whip up for dinner :)
I wish I could grow fresh herbs! Stupid apartment…
Hee.hee, I love bread too! Tough to moderate the yummy stuff indeed. These biscuits look great Stephanie! Has Bisquick come out with a non-hydrogenated (trans fat) version yet?
Hey Kelly. The Heart Smart version I used in this recipe has 0 g trans fat! :)
I share your pain….these sure do look amazing!
Stephanie…I’m with you on bread. But you know….if you’re making home made soup…..you’ve gotta have bread! These biscuits look amazing and you should have less guilt since you lightened them up! Fabulous! : )
Hi Stephanie! I am always left feeling slightly hungry whenever I leave your website.. LOL.. It must be a good thing.. I suppose :P. I really love good cheese biscuits where it’s texture is almost as close to a scone. Instead of sweet, it’s savoury. Love it.. I really could eat this by dunking into a good nice hearty warm soup!! xoxo
Aw, thanks, Jo! I love the texture of scones too and these biscuits are really close!
I love this, I can’t quit bread either. These sound super tasty, I can never say no to any bisquit!
There’s no way these are low-fat…they look way too good! I LOVE me some carbs. At least these guys won’t cause me so much guilt!
These look like a great addition for a dinner party. Thanks for sharing!
I haven’t made biscuits in ages and am totally digging your low fat recipe. Going to get some chives today and try this recipe.
I hope you like the recipe!
I too wish I hated bread! It’s just SO GOOD. Oh well maybe in my next life! These biscuits sound amazing and are so pretty! Im sure they were great with a nice bowl of soup!
Um, hello?! You are my hero. I tried to create a recipe like this for the last Recipe Redux and it was a complete failure.
